1. Influences

    1.1 Political



The political events of the 1920’s influenced much of the literature during the time. Equal rights amendments and women’s suffrage inspired new ideas and influenced many women and African Americans to write. World War I also influenced may men who served such as Ernest Hemmingway to write.

    1.2 Social



The society had the biggest influence on 1920's literature. Women had different values and morals. People married for love and not for children. New ideas about birth control sparked much support from women. Leisure was more common and popular. The Harlem Renaissance influced many African Americans. All of these things influenced the authors of the 1920's to write.

    1.3 Economic



The economy also had an influence on 1920's literature. There was new technology such as electricity and automobiles. Many women worked outside the home in factories instead of laboring over house work, which could easily be completed due to new inventions such as flushing toilets and working sinks. There were many more job opportunities and the style of maagement in business changed. These changes in the economy influenced much of the literature in the 1920's.
